Canton.

Mr. Tomes not wishing lir. Kwan to assume that he had come up especially to call on him opened the interview by stating that his son was on a visit from America and he had brought him up to see Canton.. and that he availed of the opportunity of calling on Mr. Kwan to see if anything could be done to bring about a more speedy settlement of the Limestone question.

Mr. Tomes then mentioned that certain proposals had been made by H. B. .'s Minister to the Wai Wu Pu, Peking, and he would like to learn the attitude of the Canton Government in regard to them.

Kwan replied that the Green Island Cement Company had made a claim on his Government which they considered unjust and that until this claim was withdrawn or the justness of the claim proven, no fur- -ther negotiations for the release of Limestone and future supplies were possible. If the claim were entirely withdrawn, or in other words, if the Green Island Cement Company would acknowledge themselves in the wrong then the Canton Goverment might be able to help them in getting future supplies.

Er. Tomes said that the Green Island Cement Company might be willing to withdraw the claim if the Canton Goverment would, sinulta-

-neously, allow Contractors to fulfil their outstanding contracts, and also concede the Green Island Cement Company the right hereafter to buy Stone in the open market without hindrance or impediment.
